We have finally entered into the fullness of the Christmas atmosphere, which here in Umbria is particularly magical and evocative.
Many villages come alive with living nativity scenes ... we remember that it was St. Francis himself, returning from Palestine, who wanted to re-enact the Nativity by setting up the first nativity scene in Greccio.
Then there is no shortage of truly enchanting Christmas markets-Gubbio, Assisi, Cortona, but especially the Mercatino della Rocca in underground Perugia, which deserves a visit regardless. Like many other Umbrian cities (Orvieto, Narni, Spoleto) Perugia also has an underground area, which in ancient times was a fortress but was partly destroyed over the centuries. Fortunately, it was possible to recover part of it, and it is there that markets are set up during the Christmas season, winding along the ancient medieval underground streets.
And then how could one not pay a visit to Gubbio, where every evening the hundreds of lights are turned on to draw the silhouette of the world's largest Christmas tree, which from the top of Mount Ingino illuminates the entire town.
And after a day spent visiting villages, nativity scenes and markets, return to Torre Morgana, in its forest populated by elves and gnomes, and dine all together, with a very tasty, rich and flavorful dinner prepared with love ... and then rest in our warm and cozy rooms, set up with a Christmas theme.
